A two-hour highlight session offers participants the chance to experience rowing on a fixed-bench rowing machine under conditions simulating a Viking expedition, before moving on to sailing. Participants are welcomed with a historical introduction that sheds light on the connections between rowing boats and longships, as well as the role of William the Conqueror. They then learn the technical aspects of rowing—terminology, coordination, and rhythm—before experiencing team-based propulsion. Mini-regattas between Bantry and Ness rowboats round out this learning experience in a friendly atmosphere. At the same time, a reconstructed Viking camp comes to life with tents, tools, and artifacts inspired by the period, offering the public a tangible glimpse into the daily life of the Vikings. A replica of a drakkar, the ARGWIKOR, is on display, accompanied by explanations of its construction, use, and historical role. Historians also provide insights into Viking expeditions and their legacy, particularly focusing on the figure of William the Conqueror. Children can enjoy special activities that combine creativity and discovery: a display of model ships, a cardboard longship-building activity followed by a fun race, a puppet show about Viking adventures, maritime knot-tying workshops, and a painting contest on the theme “The Vikings and Their Conquests Along the Seine.” More than just a demonstration, this event—open to all—celebrates the passing down of traditions, highlights the ingenuity of the Vikings, and sheds light on a maritime heritage that remains largely unknown.
