Carte de Tendre / RELIQUIAE is a new film and performance project by Colette Sadler, created and presented as part of Millenium 2027. The work explores a central question: in the context of artificial intelligence and the ecological crisis, what will become of archaeology in the distant future? How are human experiences recorded and remembered? Drawing inspiration from science fiction narratives and visual aesthetics derived from films such as Chris Marker’s *La Jetée* and Fritz Lang’s *Metropolis*, the project envisions a future in which a body and a life are reproduced from an existing human subject, thereby creating a form of living archaeology of human existence. The piece examines the future through the architectural, cultural, and spiritual legacy of the Norman presence in Scotland. It explores human identity as shaped by displacement, oral traditions, conflicts, beliefs, and shared histories. It also explores how technology— particularly artificial intelligence and robotics—interacts with the human experience, questioning what defines humanity and which elements of lived experience still elude programming. This work is part of Colette Sadler’s long-term artistic research on the social impact of technology on our understanding of the human condition. It draws on the shared architectural heritage and historical ties between Scotland and Normandy, which serve as both a visual backdrop and a conceptual foundation for the film and the performance.
