"Venables: The Origins of Feudal Normandy" offers an immersive 3D recreation of the Venables motte-and-bailey castle, as it might have appeared in the 11thcentury, accompanied by an interactive digital tour accessible via an app. The project invites the public to discover a key site from the early days of feudal Normandy and to understand the fundamental role of these first earthen and wooden fortifications, which werethe precursors of medieval castles. The tour takes the form of a circuit structured around seven points of interest, allowing for a gradual and self-guided exploration of the site. Based on the most recent scientific research, the interpretive program highlights the strategic importance of Venables, at the heart of the rivalries between Frankish and Norman counts in the 11th century. The figures of Mauger de Venables and later Gilbert de Venables embody this pivotal period and provide insight into the formation and consolidation of Norman power.
