Push open the door…

… of Notre-Dame church in the heart of Louviers and let yourself be seduced by its majestic Gothic style. Built in the 13th century and remodelled in the 16th century, and famous for its architecture, this building stands out for its size and recalls the splendid days and opulence of the cloth-making town of yesteryear. Since 1846, the church has been listed as a historic monument.

Enter the spiritual world of the church through its lush 16th-century flamboyant Gothic south porch, a testament to the prosperity of the town of Louviers. Succumb to the charm of the nave, adorned in its early 16th-century colours and decorated with capitals and statues. The great organs are listed and come from Bonport Abbey.

This unusual and original tour, free all year round, takes young and old off the beaten track. Two Discovery Tours, “Louviers, cité drapière” and “Notre-Dame Church”, are available from the Seine-Eure Tourist Office.

Stained glass windows

remarkable

On sunny days, the stones of the building are flooded with soft, multicoloured light from the monumental stained glass windows created by the best glass painters of the time. Note the 15th-century stained glass window of Saint-Nicolas, depicting 4 scenes from his life, and the Three Marys stained glass window from the early 16th century.

Look out for the “Maqueux d’soupe”, the curious figures that have become symbols of Louviers. These two sculptures representing the “good men of Louviers” dressed in long robes, wearing woollen caps and holding chipped bowls evoke soup time!
