From time immemorial, the Seine has served as a trade and communication route between Burgundy and the English Channel via the Paris region. Built around this natural axis, the halte batelière de Poses, in Normandy, flourished thanks in particular to river transport.
Over the centuries, generations of hauliers, carters and boatmen succeeded one another from father to son, taking part in the life of the river to derive the means of their livelihood.
Thanks to this unique heritage site, the traditions of the Seine’s river and canal dwellers are preserved and enhanced. The personal and anecdotal experiences of the bargemen help to enrich the memory of a profession that is now in decline.
The association of former bargemen, “Les Anciens et Amis de la Batellerie”, was behind the creation of this timeless museum, comprising 2 museum boats alongside the quay. These former farmers and inhabitants of the riverside villages practised inland waterway transport from generation to generation, as the technical and physical mastery of navigation on the Seine required solid experience at the time.
Alongside it, the restored 1928 river tug “Fauvette”, a listed Historic Monument, illustrates the life of the boatmen on board: accommodation for the captain and engineer, wheelhouse and engine room. .
