The Manoir de Portejoie is surrounded by the Seine, fields and ponds, at a place known as Port-Pinché. In the 12th century, a port was located here, providing communication between the Vexin and the Vaudreuil valley.

In 1196, Richard the Lionheart built a fortress on the island opposite the manor linked by a bridge. This was shortly before the construction of Château-Gaillard in Les Andelys to protect the Duchy of Normandy against his adversary King Philip Augustus of France.
