A cycle route

between spirituality, nature and heritage

itinérance à vélo sur les chemins de Saint-Jacques

The Saint-Jacques à vélo via Chartres, or V41 cycle route, takes you almost 970km between Poses (in the Eure department) and Mont-de-Marsan (in the Landes department), following part of the legendary route to Santiago de Compostela. In the Seine-Eure area, this stretch stretches along the Eure valley, between picturesque villages, outdoor activities and heritage treasures.

This green route offers an ideal alternative for cycle travellers looking for gentle roaming, encounters and cultural discoveries. Between Chartres and Rouen, this cycle route brings together two emblematic cathedrals, while passing through bucolic landscapes where it’s good to stop… and breathe.

In Seine-Eure, the route of the V41 largely follows the “voie verte”, entirely dedicated to soft traffic between Poses and Pinterville. The rest of the route is laid out on shared lanes with low traffic density. A journey that follows in the footsteps of the centuries-old routes taken by the pilgrims to Compostela.

Itinerary

Step by step

Stage 1

Poses - Acquigny (20 km)

Start your adventure in Poses, a charming boating town nestled by the lake. It’s the perfect place for a dynamic warm-up at the Léry-Poses park in Normandy: water-skiing, swimming, paddle, or a visit to Biotropica, a large animal park. After this refreshing interlude, hop on your bike along a peaceful greenway between Val-de-Reuil and Louviers. Take the opportunity to stop off at “Carré Saint-Cyr”, a desacralized church that today showcases the work of exceptional craftsmen. Also visit the church Notre-Dame de Louviers and admire the statue of Saint-Jacques le Mineur, a nod to the Jacobean Way. Finish the stage at Acquigny, on the banks of the Lac de l’Onglais, perfect for a well-deserved nature break.

Stage 2

Acquigny - Pacy-sur-Eure (29 km)

This stretch is ideal for lovers of heritage and authentic villages. It will take you in the footsteps of great artists at la Croix-Saint-Leufroy first of all, where Marcel Pagnol owned a mill, or Autheuil-Authouillet, former home of Yves Montand and Simone Signoret, exuding a peaceful atmosphere. Take a detour to the chapel of Saint-Christophe de Reuilly or the church at Cocherel. The route takes you through Jouy-sur-Eure and Ménilles, between rivers and old mills. A trip down in a canoë or a jaunt in a vélorail will spice up your day before you reach Pacy-sur-Eure, a charming little town with plenty of shops and a little tourist train that will delight the curious.

Step 3

Pacy-sur-Eure - Saint-Georges-Motel (36 km)

For those who want to go further afield, the route that leaves Pacy follows the Eure as far as Breuilpont on quiet old back roads dotted with sand pits, famous fishing spots. Then here you are on a greenway built on an old railway line. The ruins of the château fort d’Ivry-la-Bataille and the majestic demeure d’Anet, former property of Diane de Poitiers, dominate the landscape. The Saint-Jacques de Compostelle church at La Boissière is a must-see spiritual stopover, before continuing, why not, to Chartres or Rouen, two cathedral cities illuminated at dusk.

Much more than just a cycle route, the V41 – Saint-Jacques à vélo is an invitation to travel, to let go, to encounter a living territory. Between the wonder of our heritage, the bounty of nature and the Norman way of life, every pedal stroke becomes a discovery.
